Evolution of the evolution stones

The evolution stones, or elemental stones, still hold a fascinating enigma; imbued with a mysterious energy, they are capable of triggering exclusive evolutionary stages in certain Pokémon compatible with one or more of these special items.
The name "elemental stones" has become less popular as items like Sun Stone or Dusk Stone have become more common, joining the more long-known companions easily associated with a single element (hence "elementals"), such as the Water, Fire, or Thunder Stones.
Beyond the special energy that pervades them, evolution stones are, first and foremost, stones. My theory is that the evolutionary energy within them is the same in all of them, but that its effects vary due to the properties each of these stones already possessed before containing that energy. Thus, a stone akin to water can turn Eevee into a Vaporeon capable of dissolving into sea foam, like an Andersenian mermaid, while the mysterious Clefairy have a predilection for stones imbued with lunar radioactivity.
While I usually study the ways Pokémon adapt to their environments, objects are also shaped by circumstances, and discovering what they've had to adapt to over time can help us gain a more complete picture of what happened on our beautiful planet.
After all, the evolution stones themselves have evolved!
But then...
What were they before?
There are currently ten known evolution stones, and these are the ten we'll be discussing. For this time (no offense to the good Professor Sycamore), we won't discuss Mega Stones and Key Stones, which we'll explore in detail in a separate discussion. They're immediately "disqualified" from our list because they're shape-shifting tools, incapable of inducing permanent evolution. For the same reason, we won't discuss Wish Stars, Z-Crystals, and the like, as they will have their own separate in-depth articles. Instead, we tried to find the perfect candidates to determine the origins of evolution stones, looking for something that closely matches their name, appearance, description, and the stories surrounding them. And here is the fruit of our research!
Below, you'll find a description of each stone. The list is still being updated!
